Hello, I’m HYUNG-GUHN “HUGO” YI
I’m a German-Korean writer & director based in Berlin. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Motion Pictures (B.A.) and a Master’s degree in Leadership in the Creative Industries (M.A.) from the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt, Germany.
My graduation short film Far from Abroad, premiered at the Festival du film coréen à Paris in 2020 and was also shown in the Austin Asian American Film Festival in TX, USA (2021) and Werkstatt der Jungen Film Filmszene (2021) in Wiesbaden, Germany.
Next to my work as a writer & director, I completed an internship at funk, the content network of the German public broadcasters ARD & ZDF, and worked as a Writer’s Room Coordinator and editor at vjllage, the production company from author and showrunner Johannes Boss. Since 2024, I have been a founding member of Berlin Asian Film Network (BAFNET) e.V., an association dedicated to strengthening Asian diasporic voices in the German film and television industry.
Currently, I work as a freelance filmmaker and am developing my feature film Tae-Ho and the Red Foxes (WT), a children’s adventure film set in Germany. The project was developed through the scholarship program Akademie für Kindermedien (eng.: academy for children’s media) in 2024/2025.
